VINNIE SUNSERI

Sunseri lacks ideal linebacker measurables when projecting for the major college level but this guy is simply a darn good football player when you put on the film with great intangibles between the white lines. Not going to light it up on the combine circuit but he plays the game fast, physical and with a chip on his shoulder. Most production comes on or behind the line of scrimmage. Built more like a strong safety lacking prototypical outside linebacker height and length but possesses great body control and plays much bigger at the point of attack. Demonstrates great natural instincts and football intelligence; sniffs the play out quickly and consistently plays downhill with few false steps. Constantly slips blocks and beats blockers to the hole showing very good initial quickness and lateral agility through the wash; helps mask his marginal size. Takes sharp, direct angles with little wasted motion; displays very good short-range pursuit speed. Utilizes his smaller size to his advantage knifing through traffic with inside-out angles. Plays with very good pad level and a solid base. Great tackler who runs through ball carriers bringing his hips with striking pop; limits second efforts. Does need to avoid the occasional lunge tackle and leaving his feet. Flashes more-than-adequate sideline-to-sideline range and doesn't give up on the play when caught out of position; plays with an intense motor. However, he's a bit quicker than fast and we do feel he will need to play covered up at the next level and it may need to be in a 3-3-5 scheme as Bandit or Rover type hybrid safety to take advantage of his skill-set. A great ball-hawk but his ability to step up, take on the cutoff block and hold his base at the major college level is a concern. Closes the cushion fast in coverage and does a great job blanketing his underneath zone but would need to polish up his drop, crossover footwork and coverage technique to play a true safety position. He is a lot more effective playing downhill than opening to turn and run or drop in coverage. That said, the tape doesn't lie, Sunseri is very active around the football and a highly productive linebacker. Obviously with more size he would likely be a top national prospect but we still expect recruiting to heat up for him this spring. Should develop into a special teams demon which adds to his upside.
