TODD CHANDLER

Over the last few classes there seems to be a rising trend of shorter, but very talented defensive tackles and Chandler fits in that mix. He lacks ideal height and while listed at 6-foot-1 on film it seems like a generous listing. He does display good bulk to play in the trenches and while not as tall as you would like, he shows that he can make his size work for him. He has good quickness off the ball and flashes the ability to quickly get in the gap and get penetration. He has the ability to be a disruptive presence in the backfield, but that is not the backbone of his game. He plays best coming off the ball low, getting under the blocker's pads and winning the leverage battle. Displays the ability to bring his hands, strike and separate from the blocker. Displays good strength and can be violent, when engaged and is able to shed. Does a good job of being able to hold his ground at the line, locate the ball and separate to make the play. Overall reach can be a concern when he engages much bigger blockers and he can have some trouble quickly shedding in those situations, but his strength and activeness should not make that possible lack of reach an issue. While good with his hands, he is prone to being cut. You love that he pops right back up, but does need to work on protecting his legs. Has a nice motor and plays past the tackle box. Displays overall good athleticism for a big man and will flash a little acceleration in pursuit. He is a solid tackler and a big man that can make the play when he gets around the ball. Really seems strongest against the run. Has the tools to get into the backfield and pressure the quarterback. Needs to work on developing a plan as a pass-rusher. Can get caught at the line trying to battle with blockers and needs to channel some of that energy into calculated pass-rush moves. Chandler is a good defensive tackle prospect. Needs to bounce back from some missed injury time in 2008, but if healthy he is another in a growing line of shorter but disruptive prospects at the position.
