PHILLIP SIMS

Sims is a guy that gets better and better the more you watch him. He reminds us of a high school version of David Garrard both in stature, build and arm strength. He possesses adequate height and a thick, sturdy build and is capable of standing in the pocket and delivering in the face of the rush. He plays in a wide open scheme that changes the launch point and requires him to make a wide variety of throws short-to-deep and on the move. One of the things we really like about Sims is his ability to move around in the pocket and buy time yet keep his eyes downfield and stay within the scheme. While he is more than capable of improvising and making plays with his legs, he is a QB first and runner second and is not a guy that is just going to take off and run without trying to go through his progressions. He plays mostly out of the shotgun, but gets set quickly, shows good foot and set up balance and delivers the ball with power and zip. He possesses the arm to make all the necessary throws and he is capable of driving the ball deep as well as making deep sideline throws outside of the numbers--throws extremely well on the run to both sides. Shows elite revolutions on the ball when his feet are set. His delivery is over-the-top and very consistent mechanically, but he carries the ball low. He is a good athlete and while he has the ability to be a dual-threat guy, he really isn't. His legs just give an added dimension. At times as you watch Sims he will get locked into one target or area of the field and must be careful not to get too dialed into one receiver and telegraph where he is going to go with the ball. He has great feet, but not great footwork and needs more attention to detail and experience dropping from center and gaining the proper depth. Overall, Sims has been well coached and fits very well into this scheme. He's a disciplined player and has a nice feel for the position. He makes good decisions with the ball, plays with confidence and has all the tools physically to become an excellent college prospect.
