Hughes is a tough defender. He possesses a good frame and while he has solid bulk now he has plenty of room to pack on more size with time in a college weight program. He has a solid get-off though you would like to see him crowd the ball more and work on being more consistently quick off the snap. He is tough versus the run. Does a good job of taking on blockers and using his reach to separate. In the film we evaluated he was wearing a cast which likely hindered his ability to engage blockers, but despite the injury you like to see that he still was able to create some space and shed. You also like to see the toughness and willingness to play hurt. He moves well laterally, but needs to be sure to get in position and keep containment. He runs well and has good speed for his size. He does need to be sure to protect his legs. As a pass rusher he will attack the outside shoulder and displays the ability to get the shoulder, get some body lean, and turn the corner. He has the size and tools to be a productive and well rounded defensive end. With his size he could develop into a tackle, but we feel he moves well enough to be able to stay at end even as he fills out his frame. Could be a solid swing guy though. Need to follow his development and see him in action with two healthy hands, but overall a good prospect.
