KONRAD ZAGZEBSKI

Zagzebski is a very solid linebacker prospect with good upside and the coveted scheme versatility to potentially play both inside and outside; maybe an ideal OLB in a 3-4 defense with continued physical development. Has great height with a long, well-built frame that should fill out to the 240-pound range at the next level while retaining his current short-range speed and quickness. Lacks great reactive athleticism but makes sound, disciplined reads between the tackles and finds the ball quickly once located. Very stout filling his middle run gaps at the high school level with his superior size, strength and overall physicality at the point of attack. A guy who stays square to the line of scrimmage and decreases inside cutback lanes. Shows above average downhill burst and quickness for his size when he has a direct lane to ball. Runs through ball carriers and makes solid contact when lined up. Scrapes well off-tackle taking direct angles to ball and utilizing his hands effectively to keep blockers off his body. Flashes adequate short-area, change-of-direction skill mirroring the cutback. Not real fast on paper but will effectively pursue sideline-to-sideline with good chase speed and a high motor. Provides efficient range on both run and pass support and is deceptively mobile and athletic for his size when needing to play in space at the high school level. However, we feel his physical tools, speed and hips will be most productive between the tackles at the major college level or as a strict outside vertical attacker and a 3-4 scheme. Struggles breaking down sharply on off-tackle pursuit and tends to overrun the ball. Shows some overall hip stiffness changing direction in space and wasted motion turning to run on pursuit or back in coverage. In the middle we have concerns about his marginal leverage and flexibility. Can play very high resulting in him getting turned and jolted back out of the hole at the point of attack. His lack of bend also hinders his transitional quickness and ability to break down sharply as a tackler. We question his lateral fluidity to sift through the faster moving traffic at the next level and slip the cutoff block. We don't not see consistently good burst needed to beat quicker linemen to the hole and make plays on the ball inside-out. Thought he would dominate his competition more from a physical standpoint with his superior size. That said, you can't coach Zagzebski's large frame, toughness, motor and deceptively good feet for his size. Needs some polish, improved flexibility and continue work in the weight-room, but has a lot of physical tools for a program to polish up and develop at the major college level.
