KENDAL THOMPSON

Thompson reminds us so much of a left-handed Russell Shepard and the same scrutiny will apply throughout the recruiting process-- will he stay at QB or move to another position? At this stage in the game Thompson has a stronger arm and is more polished as a passer than Shepard despite his quirky, unorthodox delivery often seen from left-handers. However, make no mistake, Thompson is a passer first, runner second and a very dangerous athlete under center. He has adequate height a lean frame. Is built like a wide receiver. He works from the shotgun spread, but isn't just a dink and dunk passer. Has shown the ability to make a variety of throws from different launch points to various levels of the field. Shows quality arm strength and can change ball speeds depending on the throw especially on underneath patterns. For such a great athlete he shows nice patience in the pocket and really works to go through progressions before tucking the ball to run. Displays adequate velocity on most throws, but like many lefties does not display great zip and tight spirals which ultimately does not matter if the end result is positive. Puts great touch and air under deep throws and really knows how to drop the ball in over the top of tight coverage. Throws very well on the run to either side and is comfortable with consistently throwing on the move. As an athlete Thompson shows terrific initial quickness and burst within the pocket. He can evade and make the first rusher miss in the blink of an eye and is dangerous as a run/pass threat because he can always keep the play alive. He is elusive and sudden with great change-of-direction to make plays with his legs when out of the pocket or past the line of scrimmage. He is the perfect spread offense QB for these reasons. When watching Thompson it is easy to like his production and competitiveness, but not always easy to like the method/look of how it gets done. His delivery is unique and he can be a bit of a "pusher" instead of a "passer". Can be a bit mechanical with his release as opposed to consistently smooth and fluid. However, unlike many left-handers who possess a 3/4 or sidearm delivery, Thompson's release is compact and over-the-top. Overall, Thompson is highly productive and a terrific athlete. We would bet he will be given every opportunity to remain at QB at the next level, but his overall versatility gives him tremendous value.
