KEELIN SMITH

Smith is a projected safety prospect with cornerback movement skills and speed. A tall, sleek athlete who will offer his future defensive coordinator very good scheme versatility. While he has great height and is aggressive, he is lean and will need to fill out his narrow base to play down in the box and provide stout run support at the next level. Flashes great range and can cover the entire field on both run and pass support assisted by his long body. Transitions in and out of his pedal smoothly with few wasted steps. Has very good plant-and-drive skill. Displays good quickness and burst out of his breaks. Drives hard on underneath routes and separates a lot of balls. Flashes very good closing speed. Is physical and makes solid contact as a hitter. In deep coverage, he opens, turns and adjusts to the downfield throw with great body control for his 6-foot-3 frame. Tracks the ball well, times his break and puts himself in correct position to make plays. Does a very good job getting over the top of routes but can stick to receivers tightly in one-on-one contested jump-ball matchups as well making corner still a possibility. Takes sharp angles running the alley on run support with little wasted movement; has good change-of-direction skill for his high-cut frame. Can avoid and slip blocks but also use his hands well to shed. Has played a lot of corner and will need some time to develop physically as a safety, particularly through his hips and lower base for run support purposes. However, Smith offers the flexibility to play corner until that time and may end up playing there throughout his career if lands in a scheme that covets taller perimeter defenders. We like his ability to press and match up in the redzone. Does needs to play lower with better hip-sink to improve transitional skills out on the perimeter. Overall, a great athlete and one of the more versatile defensive backs in 2011.
