CHRISTIAN HEYWARD

Heyward is a good looking defensive line prospect. He moves around the line in high school playing inside and out as well as from a "two"-point stance at times and could likely fill a swing role in college as well. He will most likely though settle in as a defensive tackle where he could be a handful as a pass rusher. He may lack ideal weight, but he is a kid with a long and thick frame. He has good height and displays a good reach and looks on film to have a thick lower body. He also appears to have the frame to add more size as he continues to physically develop. He displays the tools to be a good well-rounded defensive tackle, but initially grabs your attention with his pass rush ability. He gets off the ball well, flashing at times good initial quickness. He does a good job of attacking half-a-man and being active with his weapons. He has a violent club and can quickly get his hips flipped and swim and work past to get penetration. He really seems most comfortable with that move but displays the ability to consistently attack the edge and be active with his hands. He does need to work on being prepared to take on and defeat blocking backs as he breaks through the line of scrimmage. He does a good job of getting his hands up when he can't get to the quarterback, but needs to be sure to wait until the last second before he decides to leave his feet. He can be productive against the run. At his best when he can quickly get into the gap. Does a good job of staying square and keeping solid leverage and using his hand to keep the blocker off of him. Needs at times to be sure to not run him self out of the play. Runs well for his size and displays solid short-space quickness. He is a good tackler. Heyward is a promising defensive tackle prospect who offers some versatility, good ability, and continued upside.
