BLAKE BARKER

The state of Massachusetts is no hot bed of national recruits, but with Barker the state seems poised to have a second straight tight end prospect raise some eyebrows in as many years. Barker is a tall kid with the frame to keep packing on good bulk when he enters a college weight program. He has ideal height for the tight end position and can be a solid target in the red zone. He doesn't present the type of ability as a receiver that will make defenses game plan around him, but he can help move the chains. Does a good job of getting into his route and is a solid target in the short-to-intermediate passing game. He has good hands, but seems to catch the ball into his body at times. He displays good concentration and is willing to absorb a hit to make a catch. He displays solid straight-line speed and some sneaky athleticism when running with the ball. If he can get the ball in stride or in some space, he can pick up some yardage. He is a productive blocker. Flashes the ability to come off the ball low, get hand placement and get under a blocker's pads. When he does that, he can drive the defender off the ball. He has a wide stance, but it seems to help him regulate his pad level. He is good at trying to get placement with his hands, but needs to be sure to keep his hips under him because he can get overextended. Does a good job of working up to second level and getting a piece of moving targets. He is a tough kid and while the defender may not always go where he wants him he will stick with his block and displays the ability to get the job done. We feel his best fit is at tight end in college, but we would not be surprised if he got some attention at defensive end. He displays the ability to shoot his hands and use his reach to create separation. Needs to generate more power from his lower body because he will try and muscle his way free with his upper-body strength. He is tough at the point of attack. Works to keep good pad level. Can tend to lead shoulder first and while he is good at spinning out of blocks he relies on that a lot and you would like to see him separate and work across the blockers face more instead of turning his back to the ball. Active pass rusher who tries to use his weapons to work past the blocker.
