Johnson has the ability to dominate as an edge player with athleticism and playing strength. This player possesses great size and very good playing speed for the outside linebacker position at the major level of competition and the physical tools to play inside as well. As a tight end his balance and agility are evident; able to gain leverage when reach blocking while maintaining contact and playing on his feet vs. 2nd level defenders. Displays good flexibility on defense; can play on or off the line of scrimmage with very good K&D skills. Reacts well to run plays both at him or away; has the strength to play off blocks but must learn to play a little lower at times, keeping blockers off his legs. Demonstrates good downhill stacking skill for an OLB; can work through traffic, remain balanced and finish off ball carriers with solid wrap tackles; will punish on occasion when the opportunity presents itself. We especially like his patience when flow is away; can fill quickly with a quick burst or show patience vs. the cutback run. His run and pass blitz ability creates havoc in the backfield; has a strong finishing burst to the QB. Pass coverage will need refinement but early indications demonstrate quick reactions to underneath routes. His playing speed and balance should allow him to be an early special team's contributor. This prospect has a very good motor; is always looking to make game changing plays while showing excellent pursuit habits. Johnson's size and athleticism are super assets at the major level of play however stepping on the field and becoming an immediate starter will be addressed in the future. That being said, there is reason to believe that early playing time is a distinct possibility.
